The Twelve Step program offered by Alcoholics Anonymous has been shown to be highly effective. It should be much more effective if the addict works those steps within a strategic, extended term framework. While the avoidance of negative consequences is a motivator, a strategic approach adds the promise of positive consequences to reinforce the addict’s desire to remain sober.
